Špela Mastnak, born 1989 in Celje, Slovenia is a free lancing percussionist currently based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She is a member of Mobile Beats Ensemble and NAMES Ensemble and as free-lancing musician is engaged in various different music and theatre projects. After completing her bachelor study from the Music Academy in Zagreb under prof. Ivana Bilić and prof. Igor Lešnik, she continued her study of percussion at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg with prof. Peter Sadlo.
In the year 2015/2016 Špela was the percussionist in the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt am Main. She has closely worked with Ensemble Modern, ÖENM, Richard Tognetti and Australian Chamber Orchestra, Heiner Göbbels and various composers including Helmut Lachenmann, Beat Furrer, Enno Poppe, Unsuk Chin, Hans Zender, Matthias Pintscher, Nico van Wersch etc. During February and March 2017 she was an Artist in residence in the Stiftung Bauhas Dessau, where she presented a project made together with Paul Beckett. In spring 2018 she was working with Heiner Göbbels on his scenic concert mit einem Namen aus einem alten Buch in Stadttheater Gießen. She has also worked with theater director Ulrich Rasche with two of his theater pieces- Sieben gegen Theben/ Antigone and Die Perser, that won Nestroy Award in 2018. In the season 2018/2019 she is engaged in Stadttheter Gießen in two theater pieces- Die fünf Sinne; Live-Hörspiel ( director Patrick Schimanski ) and De Rerum Natura; Raumkomposition für Stimme, Körper, Schlagwerk und Elektronik (directors Glogowski/Hoesch ).
She has performed in festivals like Salzburg Festspiele, Salzburg Biennale, Zagreb Biennale, Cresc Biennale Frankfurt, Klangspuren Festival Schwaz, Witten tage für Neue Kammermusik, Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Slowind Festival in Slovenia and Schnittpunkt Neue Musik Santa Cruz Festival in Bolivia. She also had the opurtunity of appearing in various percussion festivals in Europe, Asia and America.
